Homemade Pop Tarts
Pop Tarts have been around for almost 60 years. They have been a favourite breakfast treat for so many of us. But did you know that pop tarts are actually super easy to make at home? They require only a few ingredients, and taste just like the ones out of a box if not better. Try this yummy treat with your kids, we're sure they'll be asking for more.
This recipe makes 6 pop tarts*
- 2 pie shells refrigerated
- Flour (enough to sprinkle on your work surface)
- 1/2 cup Jam ( we used raspberry)
- 1 Tbsp Cornstarch
- 1 Egg
- Sprinkles (optional)
Start by rolling out your 2 pie crusts onto a floured surface. Use a knife to remove the edges. You want to try to make a square. Use a ruler, to cut three equal strips out of the square. Repeat this process on the second pie crust.
To make your pop tart filling mix together 1/2 cup of jam with 1 tablespoon of corn starch.
Put a spoonful of filling on the top half of each strip. Make sure the filling does not reach the edges of the strip. Then, whisk an egg in a bowl. Brush the egg onto the edges of the strip and fold the strip in half as shown above.
Crimp the edges of your pop tarts with fork.
Place your pop tarts on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and bake at 375 degrees fahrenheit for 15-20 minutes or until golden.
Top off your pop tarts with a little jam and sprinkles or whatever you like!
