Teach your kiddos about chain reactions and kinetic energy by using two things you may already have at home, popsicle sticks and clothespins. Chain reactions teach kiddos that one action can set off a sequence of similar actions. Similar to upright dominos in a line this activity shows how potential energy (energy in an object that is not moving) is transformed into kinetic energy when one domino is pushed and gravity pulls all the dominos to the ground. Kinetic energy is a form of energy when an object is in motion.

Materials


– Clothespins
– Popsicle sticks

Attach one popsicle stick to two clothespins as shown in the image below. Line up the clothespins in a straight line or in a simple shape. This may take a couple tries. Once you have completed that push one of the pins at one end and watch all of them fall. You can repeat this exercise and create different shapes!
